How do you replace the front air suspension spring on a BMW x5 E53?
When replacing the front air spring on BMW X5 (E53) 1999-2006, the following recommendations should be followed.
Damage to cables and air lines should be avoided;
Replacement and installation of air suspension repairing parts should only be carried out by qualified personnel;
In the case of non-compliance with the instructions for repair work with air suspension of the car, the probability of damage to the vehicle and the air struts of the shock absorber is high.
BMW X 2003
Upper sealing washer;
The front cylinder is air-tight.
Stages of dismantling a car shock absorber
During the work on replacing the shock absorber, the ignition of the car must be turned off.
It is necessary to set the steering wheel in a straight position;
Then, in the fuse box, which is located on the right side of the dashboard, fuse No. 27 (level control fuse) must be removed;
It is required to lift the car using a lifting platform (the so-called lift), before hanging the wheels. It is necessary to raise the vehicle based on the lifting points indicated by the vehicle manufacturer. It should be remembered that the displacement of the machine in a raised state can be harmful to human health;
Now you should remove the front wheel;
Then it is necessary to remove the air suspension strut following the manufacturer’s instructions (keep the shock absorber fasteners to reuse them).
Stages of disassembly and assembly of the shock absorber strut
It is necessary to remove the locknut M14x1.5 mm, the upper rack washer and the upper sealing washer, which must be put aside;
Then you need to remove and set aside the plastic retainer of the lower part of the air spring;
After that, remove and set aside the air suspension cylinder itself;
After this, it is required to remove and set aside two sealing and two thrust shock absorber rings;
Then you need to grease the lower seal ring of the shock absorber with special silicone grease and install a new air spring on the shock absorber;
It is necessary to put a good pressure on the air cylinder so that the lower metal piston is higher than the two lower o-rings. If you do not do it right, the cylinder will not sit tight on the shock absorber and will not be able to fill with air;
Then install the sealing washer, upper washer and locknut. The nut must be tightened with a rotating force of 75-80 Newtons per meter (55-60 pounds of force per foot);
ATTENTION: When installing the upper sealing washer(rubber bushing mount), make sure that the smaller protrusion on the inside diameter of the washer is facing out. Failure to properly install the rubber mount bushing may result in damage to the shock absorber.
This disassembly and assembly of the shock absorber strut is completed.
Shock Absorber Installation Steps:
It is necessary to remove the three nuts of the upper pillar support;
Then you need to install a new rack between the lower and upper support;
Tighten the three upper nuts and two lower nuts / bolts in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations;
Now you need to connect the air supply wire and tighten with a force of 2 Newton per meter (17.7 pounds per inch);
Replace the wheel and tighten the clamping nuts in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations;
In no case do not allow to remove the machine from the lift without the necessary pressure in the air suspension!
The pneumatic compressor pump fuse can be replaced;
After that, you need to lower the lifting platform to the standard height of the car body;
Then you should start the engine, wait two minutes and activate the lift function;
Slowly lower the lift, and when the car is on wheels, completely lower it;
Thoroughly check shock absorbers for leaks;
This completes the installation of the shock absorber.
