The solution to the abnormal noise in the front axle air suspension shock absorber area of the Mercedes-Benz S600 W222
Involved models: Model 222, with air suspension system (AIRMATIC) / code 489 full-time four-wheel drive (4MATIC)
Fault description: When driving on uneven roads and turning, the area of the front axle air suspension damping column makes a creaking sound. At present, this phenomenon only occurs on the corresponding outer wheels.
The cause of the failure: When turning, the components inside the suspension shock absorber column collide with each other due to the axis movement, causing creaking or knocking noises. In order to correct this effect, the vehicle has been separately installed with wedge-shaped washers at the factory.
However, in individual cases, component tolerances can also cause noise.
Diagnose and repair solution:
a) When turning and driving, if the noise appears on the outside of the suspension damping column-remove the wedge-shaped washer of the outside suspension damping column.
b) When turning and driving, if the noise appears on the inner side of the suspension damping column-install the wedge-shaped washer of the inner suspension damping column.
Tip: Define the installation position of the gasket by locating the bolt hole and using a label.
Important: Wedge-shaped gaskets are installed on both sides of the suspension shock-absorbing column at the factory, but usually work can only be performed on the suspended shock-absorbing column in question. Otherwise, noise may also appear on the side that has not been complained.
